My mother had a major depressive disorder. Her dad was an abusive alcoholic who never amounted to much except fighting and gambling. And drinking. So it was not hard for me to understand why my mother developed this disorder. Especially when things in her marriage to my dad got a bit rocky.

My paternal grandmother also had depression that she struggled with all her life. She was abandoned by her parents at an early age and left with others to raise her. She had a very rough childhood.
